Sharif is a faculty in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA and has taught graduate thesis, graduate core studio and in the Cultural Studies department at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in 2011/12. Since 1994 he has held academic appointments at many architecture schools including his alma mater in the United Kingdom; Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles where he was Associate Professor and Assistant Chair of the Architecture/Landscape/Interiors department; and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, RI.
Between 1997 and 2008, Sharif worked on numerous award-winning architectural projects with significant practices in the Los Angeles area, including Koning Eizenberg where he was an associate from 2005 to 2008. From 2007 to 2009 he served as President of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design. His essays and reviews have been published in journals and periodicals including 306090, arq, Constructs, Log and X-TRA. He is also a member of the editorial board of arq (Architectural Research Quarterly; Cambridge University Press, United Kingdom).
Sharif received his Masters degree (1994), Post Graduate Diploma (with highest distinction - 1994) and undergraduate degrees (1993) in architecture from the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen, Scotland where he was awarded the James B Johnston Diploma Year Prize for his thesis project in 1994. In 1990-1991 he was an exchange student at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. His undergraduate dissertation ‘On Venturi and Scott Brown’ was awarded an RIBA prize and retained in the permanent collection of the RIBA Library in 1993.
